Exploring Sumatra’s Kerinci Seblat National Park

Duration: 7 Days

Overview

Kerinci Seblat National Park sprawls from the coastal plains of West Sumatra, up the Barisan Mountains, and over deep river gorges, offering a vast expanse of biodiversity and adventure. Covering more than 13,000 square kilometers, this UNESCO-listed park is the largest in Sumatra, home to rare and critically endangered species such as the Sumatran tiger, clouded leopard, and the elusive tapir.

The road from Padang City to Sungai Penuh offers an unforgettable journey, winding through pristine rainforests, where hornbills glide through the canopies and long-tailed macaques curiously greet travelers. The eight-hour drive may be long, but it rewards adventurers with some of the most scenic landscapes in Southeast Asia.

  • Visit Lake Gunung Tujuh, the highest caldera lake in the region, perfect for serene hikes and breathtaking scenery.
  • Explore the park’s dense jungles, home to over 370 bird species, including the rare Raffles’s malkoha and Sumatran cochoa.
  • Discover the Rafflesia arnoldii, the world’s largest flower, blooming in the heart of this tropical paradise.
