Discover Spices Island: Ambon Banda Neira

Duration: 7 Days

Overview

Banda Neira Island, sometimes written as Naira Island, is the historic heart of the Banda Islands Indonesia, a small volcanic archipelago in Maluku Province in eastern Indonesia. Once known as the legendary Spice Islands, the Banda Islands were the world’s only source of nutmeg and mace for centuries, making Banda Neira one of the most important trading centers in Southeast Asia.

Today, the Banda Islands attract travelers with their mix of colonial heritage, untouched nature, and spectacular marine life. Surrounded by a deep sapphire sea, Banda Neira Island is also famous for its pristine reefs and world-class underwater scenery. Many visitors come here to experience snorkeling and diving in the Maluku Islands or to explore some of the region’s most beautiful tropical beaches in Maluku.

The easiest way to reach Ambon to Banda Neira is by flying to Pattimura Airport on Ambon Island, about 36 km from Ambon City, followed by a ferry or small aircraft to the Banda Islands. As part of the wider Maluku Islands travel destination, Banda Neira offers a rare combination of spice-trade history, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and pristine tropical seas.

An underwater perspective of healthy coral reefs and seagrass with a tree-covered tropical island visible in the background, perfect for snorkeling in the Banda Islands.
