Discover Maluku Kei Island Tour

Duration: 8 Days

Overview

The Kai Islands (also known as Kei Islands) of Indonesia are a stunning group of islands in the southeastern part of the Maluku Islands, located in the province of Maluku. Historically referred to as the Spice Islands, the Moluccas gained fame for their regionally specific plants such as nutmeg, mace, and cloves, which attracted European nations during the 16th century.

Though originally Melanesian, many of the islanders were exterminated in the 17th century during the spice wars, particularly in the Banda Islands. The Kei Islands experienced a second wave of immigration with Austronesian settlers arriving in the early 20th century under Dutch rule, a process that continued into the modern Indonesian era. Despite this rich history, the Kei Islands remain relatively untouched by mass tourism, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience their natural beauty and tranquillity.

The islands boast some of the best beaches in the world, with powdery white sand that stretches along pristine coastlines. The snorkeling and diving experiences in the Kei Islands are among the finest, featuring vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. These underwater wonders, combined with the islands’ serenity, make Kei a hidden gem for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

Located roughly between Indonesian Papua and Australia, the Kei Islands consist of two main islands: Kei Besar (literally “Big Kei”) and Kei Kecil (literally “Small Kei”), along with several smaller islands. Kei Kecil is particularly popular among local Indonesians for its breathtaking beaches and turquoise waters, yet it remains largely undiscovered by international travelers. This is due to its remote location in the far east of Indonesia, which requires more effort to reach. With no direct flights from Jakarta and higher travel costs, the Kei Islands are a blessing for those seeking secluded escapes away from the crowds.

Plan your adventure with Indonesia's top tour operators and explore the breathtaking Maluku Islands tour for an unforgettable experience!
