Papua Baliem Valley Gorge Trekking

Overview

The indigenous population of the Baliem Valley (Papua) is known as the Dani people. Dani is one of the largest tribal groups living both in the southern and northern Baliem Valley. They are scattered all the way from the hilly terrain and the flat land in the valley. The Dani still live traditionally. One of their uniqueness is their round shape house, built from wood and grass. Their main source of livelihood is sweet potato planting and pig raising. The Dani still practice their old traditional way of living. The wooden spear, wooden ax, bone knife, and bamboo arrow are still used daily. It shows by their clothes too. The man of Dani wears only a penis gourd, while the woman wears a grass skirt. However, with the modern influence, some young people living near Wamena have worn T-shirts.

Highlights

  • Sogokmo, the starting point of the trekking with your guide through Kurima District and passing some Dani sweet potatoes gardens
  • Trekking to descend the steep hill down to traditional hanging bridge across Baliem river for about 1.5 hours
  • Continue the trek up to a village called Hitugi. Climbing up the hill all the way to the village is something different, but the scenery is incredibly beautiful combined with small villages and local people working in the field
  • Trek to Sogokmo. The walk today is the longest one for about 7-8 hours, depend on your speed, but the terrain is not very difficult as trails wider and the panorama is so evicting
  • Explore Obia Village (not too far from Jiwika) one of the Dani village which is still preserved their old way of life, penis gourd, grass skirt, and round shape house (honai)
  • Witness pig feast and war dance. These 2 attractions allow you to have an insight view of the prehistoric age culture where all adult men will come to the battlefield with their body ornaments. Spear, arrow, bone knifes are taken by them
  • Sumpaima villages, about 10 minutes ride from Obia, where we will see a 250 years old mummy at one of the old house here. Also, we will visit the natural cave at Wosilimo village around 20 minutes from Sumpaima
  • At Jayapura visit; Mac Arthur World War II monument, Sentani lake, the Anthropology museum, Hamadi market

Itinerary

Upon arrival at Jayapura airport by GARUDA, LION OR BATIK, meet and greeting service by your guide and check in on the flight to Wamena around 11.00, right in the heart of the Baliem Valley from Jayapura (DJJ) they will take flight to Wamena (WMX) by IL 273. Flying past vertical mountain cliffs and mist clad valleys, you will understand why the place remained isolated for so many centuries ! After passing local customs – there are alcohol restrictions in the Baliem Valley. After arrival in Wamena airport Then drive 40 minutes to Sogokmo, the starting point of the trekking with your guide, cook and local porters. Trekwill be 4 hours thru Kurima District and passing some Dani sweet potatoes gardens. Afternoon arrive at village and you may walk around, while your cook preparation for dinner. Overnight stay at local guest house of Kilise.

After breakfast, you are proceed trekking to descend the steep hill down to traditional hanging bridge across Baliem river for about 1.5 hours. Today’s walk is a little harder with narrow and slippery paths. But you may also enjoying the nature’s beauty by stopping in the small waterfall to get refreshing while the cook serving lunch. After this part, the path gets smaller and tricky until you find another river with no bridge to cross. Our trek about 4-5 hours to Syokosimo village. Overnight stay at local  house with basic facilities OR in tents.

The trekking today is the shortest one. After breakfast you are proceed to continue the trek up to a village called Hitugi. Climbing up the hill all the way to the village is something different, but the scenery is incredibly beautiful combined with small villages and local people working in the field. You arrive to the village by noon where the cook is ready to serve lunch. Dinner and overnight stay at Hitugi village. (Walk approx. 3 hours).

After breakfast, leaving Hitugi back to Sogokmo. The walk today is the longest one for about 7-8 hours, depend on your speed, but the terrain is not very difficult as trails wider and the panorama is so evicting. Lunch served en route. Passing Kurima village before ending up in Sogokmo where the car ready to take you back to Wamena for around 90 minutes away. Overnight at BALIEM VALLEY RESORT in Wamena.

Breakfast at hotel, then we proceed drive for about 45 minutes to Obia Village (not too far from Jiwika). This village is one of the Dani village which is still preserved their old way of life, penis gourd, grass skirt, and round shape house (honai). Here, we will held pig feast and war dance. These 2 attractions allow you to have an insight view of the prehistoric age culture. In the past, any kind of problem can erupt a big war between tribes. It can be women, land possession, pig, etc. A war usually ends temporary until one party get loose. Today they will show us how the tribal war looks like. All adult men will come to the battlefield with their body ornaments. Spear, arrow, bone knifes are taken by them. After the war end, they will kill a pig and cooked together. Another interesting attraction of the Dani tribe. They cook the pork together with some sweet potatoes, grass, and vegetables on the hot stones. Almost no ingredients added. This cooking can take about 3 hours or so. Lunch box provided. Proceed to Anemoigi and
Sumpaima villages, about 10 minutes ride from Obia, where we will see a 250 years old mummy at one of the old house here. Also, we will visit the natural cave at Wosilimo village around 20 minutes from Sumpaima. Drive back to Wamena for about 50 minutes – 1 hour to stay overnight at BALIEM VALLEY RESORT.

After breakfast at hotel, transfer to Wamena airport for your flight back to Jayapura. Arrival at airport of Jayapura You may have a full day sightseeing tour to visit ; Mac Arthur World War II monument, Sentani lake. Lunch at local restaurant (personal expenses). After lunch, continued to visit the Anthropology museum, Hamadi market and Jayapura city. Afternoon check in to the Grand Alliosn Hotel in Sentani.

After breakfast, transfer to airport for your flight to your next destination.
